My older sisters and I watched “Perry Mason” religiously — well not literally religiously; my father was a rabbi and we did not watch it in the synagogue. It was in the living room on Saturday nights that our brains and hearts learned about justice.

We sat on on the big couch as the dramatic music charged the room. Then a murder portrayed horrified us and a potential client sought Perry out. We didn’t know if she was innocent or not.

Perry pursued Justice

But Perry, Paul, and Della looked under every rock to find clues to justice. Perry unwrapped lie after lie, and exposed finally the identity of the perpetrator. This scene electrified the courtroom — and my sisters and me! Justice won over cruelty and dishonesty.

So my perspective on the Kavanaugh hearing, influenced by my childhood training from “Perry Mason”, is one of justice being the priority above and beyond politics. As I write, the word “justice” brings back a memory of a Hebrew quote from the Bible. “Tzedek, tzedek tirdof.” “Justice, justice pursue.”
